ON February 4, the club met at its usual venue, The Foxlydiate Hotel, Webheath. After our usual brief monthly meeting, followed by lunch, we were entertained by Steve and Helen Wilkes, both retired teachers from Inkberrow.

MR Brian Draper, MBE, gave a humorous and thoroughly enjoyable talk entitled The Avon from source to Severn to members and guests. We were taken on a journey following the river from its source at Naseby, through the counties of Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

PRESIDENT Carol Kinsey welcomed members to the February meeting. After business was completed, members were told that the April meeting this year will be the members evening and a nearly new sale is planned following the success of last year.

ON Friday, February 21, the members of the Redditch Society, who meet at the Trinity High School, Grove Street, Redditch, were treated to a colourful evening presented by Simon Gulliver, the plant collection manager for the Botanical Gardens in Bimingham.

OUR 2014 season began on the February 3 with a wellattended presentation, by Tony Green, on Restoring an historic Redditch-made battery for the Kempton Great Engines Trust and the story of Nickel-Cadmium Battery Manufacture in the town.

THE club programme started the new year with a talk by Linda Eggins entitled “Old plants, new plants – who cares?” Ms Eggins holds a national collection of aucubas (spotted laurels) which she herself admitted, is not exactly a huge draw.

IN early October, our monthly meeting traditionally incorporates our annual business meeting. We opened proceedings by singing Jerusalem, and then dealt with our general monthly business matters, before breaking off for an early tea.

AT the October meeting members heard from Marsela Hoxha, operations director of the Refugee Council, about her experiences as an asylum seeker from Albania and her role working with asylum seekers. This was a topical talk as on the same day Keith Vaz MP, all-party home affairs select committee chairman, was reporting on the backlog of 32,000 cases, some waiting for 16 years for processing.
