AFTER the successful events of the summer and the encouraging outcome of the club’s first ever fun run in aid of men’s cancer, where the proceeds were split evenly between the Rory the Robot scheme at the Alexandra Hospital, and the UK Prostate Cancer charity, plans are under way for Autumn and Christmas.

COLIN Bell, who used to play the piano in Hollywood and knew many famous people there, entertained us most enjoyably on keyboard and with anecdotes. We sang along to a selection of popular songs. We had a good three-course supper with wine, in a hall decorated with seasonal flowers and foliage by member Linda Williams.

AT the meeting on September 3 at Plymouth Court, Headless Cross, historical events for this day were: 1651 – Battle of Worcester; Cromwell’s victory forced Charles II to flee to France. 1912 – world’s first canning factory opened in the UK to provide rations for the Royal Navy. 1939 – Second World War declared and one member described his experiences of sitting and listening to this as a boy.

CRABBS Cross Fellowship members were given an interesting talk by the leader of Redditch First Responders, including a practical demonstration of CPR, which could save a life until medical help arrives.

PRESIDENT John Tidmarsh welcomed members and visitors to the April meeting at which items under discussion were fundraising in connection with the RAFA Wings Appeal, for Battle of Britain Day on September 15, various matters arising from headquarters and local plans for a social trip on the Severn Valley Railway in July.

MR Brian Draper, MBE, gave a humorous and thoroughly enjoyable talk entitled The Avon from source to Severn to members and guests. We were taken on a journey following the river from its source at Naseby, through the counties of Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

ON Friday, February 21, the members of the Redditch Society, who meet at the Trinity High School, Grove Street, Redditch, were treated to a colourful evening presented by Simon Gulliver, the plant collection manager for the Botanical Gardens in Bimingham.

THE club programme started the new year with a talk by Linda Eggins entitled “Old plants, new plants – who cares?” Ms Eggins holds a national collection of aucubas (spotted laurels) which she herself admitted, is not exactly a huge draw.
