Golf club raises more than £2,000 for charity

Redditch Advertiser:

2:50pm Tuesday 29th July 2014

MEMBERS of the Abbey Golf Club in Redditch recently raised more than £2,000 for charity. Despite being a small club with only 250 members they managed to raise £2,054 for Help for Heroes - a charity formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts. Andrew Davill, club captain, said: "We have had a number of fundraising events over the year, the main one being a charity game day which saw 60 members competing for the top spot. "We also had two away days at other courses, the club's Avon league team had a fine system that added to the pot along with the dreaded Captain's pond on the 18th at the Abbey which raised a considerable sum from the members who were fined £1 for balls finding the water and not the green. Some members contributed far more than others." Mr Davill added: "We know how popular this charity has been within Worcestershire and we were determined to do our bit. Help for Heroes is immensely popular amongst our members, of whom a number are serving along with veterans and numerous friends who are also serving in the Armed Forces. "Adopting the charity was therefore an obvious choice." Ian Baldry, Worcestershire County Coordinator for Help for Heroes, said: "This was a magnificent achievement, and we are immensely grateful to the staff and members for their generosity and support." The donated money will support the Battle Back initiative, the Quick Reaction fund, and the recently established Hidden Wounds psychological support programme. To make an on-line donation or for more details about the charity, visit helpforheroes.org.uk.
