It was Cup week in the S & W Birmingham league. The A team played Co-Op B at Central Edgbaston, and again had five out of six winners. Once more it was Margaret D’Elia who led the way with a brilliant 21-5 card, backed up by an equally superb 21-6 win for John Alderson. Alcester’s other winners were Jean Bannister (21-10), Ken Craddock (21-13) and Ken Harvey (21-14), giving them a comfortable 55 shot passage into the third round.

In the same competition the B team faced Moseley Cricket Club’s B team on the Wythall green. They were unable to produce a single winning card and went out of the competition, losing by 50 shots Division 2 of the Yardley Wood Superleague saw the A team hosting Bournville Sports. Excellent performances from Val McDermott and Dave Hovell (both 21-8) were insufficient however to prevent Alcester going down by 8 shots. Jean Craddock (21-13) was Alcester’s other winner as they slipped to a 15 points to 3 defeat.

The B team in Division 4 on the other hand had an excellent 39 shot win away to King George VI’s B team. Superb at 21-4 were Trish Barry and Gill Spiers, with Gill Evans (21-10), David Hodgson (21-11), Eric Allport (21-16) and John Willis (21-20) all contributing points in this 16 points to 2 success.

It was also cup week in the Heart of England league. Alcester B faced stiff opposition from Tanworth A, a team from several divisions higher than Alcester. Even the home half of the team were unable to produce a winning card, although Rick Horton went close before losing by a single shot. The away four also lost all of their games, and overall Alcester went out of the competition by a massive 77 shots.

The Over 60’s section of the Heart of England league saw Alcester A travel to Co-Op A in Division 2, where they were defeated by 16 shots. With only Jean Bannister (21-13) and John Alderson (21-16) being the only winners, they gained just 2 points against the hosts 14.

The B team in Division 4 entertained Marston Green A and had a very good 46 shot victory. With only one losing card, and that by a single shot, Alcester gained 15 points to the visitors 1. Outstanding for the home side was Margaret D’Elia, who completed a superb week with a third single figure win, this time to 3. She received excellent support from Jean Craddock (21-10), David Hodgson (21-12), Trish Barry (21-15) and John Willis (21-18).
