ANDY Robinson proved he is the man for the big occasion as he recorded a points win over Harry Matthews.

Super-middleweight Robinson, known as D’Animal, emerged triumphant over four rounds at the Holte Suite at Villa Park in Birmingham on Saturday.

Victory was all the more impressive as Redditch puncher Robinson had been set to face Darren McKenna before he pulled out at short notice, with Matthews hastily thrown into the fray.

The Yorkshire boxer is a tough prospect and boasts a decent record having won 12 of his previous fights.

“Harry is a very good boxer and it’s hard to take on someone of such quality at short notice,” said Robinson.

“He could be a better boxer than me, so I knew this was going to be a very tough battle and I was happy to get through it.

“It was quite a tactical battle, I didn’t go all out I just tried to keep him at bay and make sure of the win.

“I’ve got to say that my fans were very supportive and made a lot of noise throughout. It was more like a football match.”

Victory was his 11th straight professional triumph as he maintained his impressive 100 per cent record in the paid ranks.

It was also his first win since he clinched the British Masters title in April.

Now he is hoping to his continued success will deliver more big fights.

He said: “It was important that I came through this fight because my promoter, PJ Rowson, is working hard to find even bigger fights.

“If I’d lost then that would have been a setback, but I am still on course, which is a relief.”

The 29-year-old secured the British Masters Bronze super-middleweight belt with a fifth-round stoppage of Hull’s Luke Allon at the Tower Ballroom in Birmingham to propel his career to another level.
