Corby Town 2, Redditch United 3

REDDITCH made it three straight wins with an emphatic display against a lacklustre Corby side.

But they were almost made to pay for missing a hatful of chances as the home side staged a late fightback.

The Reds dominated the opening exchanges and could have opened the scoring after just 75 seconds when Jermaine Hylton weaved his way into the area and drilled a cross towards Edwin Ahenkorah only for keeper Paul Walker to intercept.

Leavi Oshungbure then had an effort blocked before Ashley Sammons sent a shot just wide of the target.

It was all one-way as the Steelmen struggled to get out of their own half. Sammons put another effort just too high before Sam Youngs crashed an effort against the crossbar from 25-yards.

United keeper Sam Hornby did have to make a save to keep out a fierce Greg Mills free-kick on 19 minutes before Hylton was denied by another smart save from keeper Walker.

It was Oshungbure who finally broke the deadlock on 27 minutes, collecting Hylton’s pass before placing his shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

The Reds doubled their lead five minutes before the break, Omari Sterling-James powering in the loose ball after Youngs had been denied by another good Walker save.

Mills, by far Corby’s most dangerous player, had a chance to reduce the arrears on the stroke of half-time but his shot hit the outside of the Redditch upright.

The visitors continued to hold the upper hand after the break with Walker doing well to deny Sterling-James before Sammons hit the post from the resulting corner.

But after being forced to defend, the home side clawed their way back when Kalern Thomas headed in a corner.

Still the Reds pressed with Youngs and Ahenkorah going close before Hylton made it 3-1 with a shot that was deflected past the luckless keeper.

But the final stages saw Corby play their best football of the game.

Mills deservedly added his name to the scoresheet on 87 minutes, scoring a penalty following a foul on May, and Thomas then powered a shot inches wide of the Redditch goal deep in injury time.
