Rugby Town 2 Redditch United 2 (Rugby won 5-4 on penalties)

REDDITCH bowed out of the Birmingham Senior Cup in a penalty shootout at Butlin Road.

Harvey Headley saw his spot-kick saved and Justin Marsden held his nerve to put the Calor Southern League Division One South side through.

Reds made two changes with Callum Flanaghan and Jermiane Clarke both promoted from the substitutes bench in the defeat at Chippenham on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead after four minutes when Ashley Sammons’ shot was only blocked into the path of Jamie Molyneux who slotted home.

But on 28 minutes Flanaghan brought down Lewis McBride and the resulting penalty was fired home by former Redditch man Aaron Moses-Garvey.

The visitor’s continued to defend sloppily and were punished when Mason Rowley was left unmarked to head in a McBride corner in the 37th minute.

Then on the stroke of half time the Reds were level again when Edwin Ahenkorah’s corner was headed in by Headley.

Molyneux should have scored but shot wide from six yards in the 50th minute and Ashley Sammons went close on the hour. For Rugby Michael Williams fired a shot against James Mutton in the 63rd minute and Sam Youngs shot wide from close range nine minutes from time.

Redditch were reduced to ten men seven minutes from time when Mutton was sent off for picking up a second yellow card.

Both sides could have won it in stoppage time, Catlow saving well from Youngs before Niall Cooper set up Headley but he too could not provide the finishing touch.

Reds: Catlow 7, Conteh 6 (Bridgwater 73), Flanaghan 6, Sammons 6, Clarke 8, Mutton 4, Sterling-Jones 5 (Ballinger 83), Price 6, Molyneux 7 (Oshungbure 64), Ahenkorah 7, Headley 7.
