FOUR prominent local residents have been honoured for their outstanding contributions to the district’s cultural life.

The prestigious Paul Harris Fellowships were made by Bromsgrove Rotary Club at its annual dinner, which was held at The Granary, Shenstone.

Fellowships commemorate the founder of the Rotary movement and carry his name.

The principal guest, district governor Peter Smith, made the presentations to the four, who have been active in raising the standard of arts-related activities in the area.

The honours went to Mary White MBE, from Bromsgrove; Jennie McGregor-Smith, from Finstall; Dennis Norton, from Broad Green; and Elaine Turton, from Droitwich Spa, who is also the president of Bromsgrove Rotary Club.

Mr Smith said Mrs White took over as the prime mover of Bromsgrove Festival back in 1981.

As chairman, she has raised the status of the festival to a prestigious level. Artists of the topmost rank entertain townsfolk each festival season.

He added the success is largely due to her tireless efforts as principal fundraiser.

Jennie McGregor-Smith has been recognised as an initiator and driving force behind many cultural activities.

Two particular contributions were the focus of the award.

First, the success of Bromsgrove Concert Club. Its annual seasons bring varied and renowned musicians to the town.

But, above all, commented Mr Smith, it was probably due more to her persistence than to any other individual that Bromsgrove now has the Artrix.

A third fellowship was awarded to Dennis Norton. His contributions over the years have been varied and numerous.

But his generosity in donating his personal collection to the district council was recognised. It formed the basis for the Bromsgrove Museum, which although now closed, may soon reopen.

Mr Smith said that by making this award, the club wished to recognise the support it gives to the trust which is being set up to save the museum.

The final award went to Elaine Turton.

She has been president for two years.

She organised the successful Community Heroes event at Webbs last year and a fundraising initiative for the County Air Ambulance. The outcome was a presentation by the club of £1,000 to that organisation.
