MORE sports and active opportunities in Bromsgrove will now be available following the success of a funding project which has now been extended for two years.

The Sport England’s ‘Sportivate’ scheme, as part of the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games, aims to provide young people aged 11 to 25 the opportunity to receive between six and eight weeks of sport coaching as well as encouraging ongoing participation.

Up to £375,000 could now be invested in Herefordshire and Worcestershire until 2017.

The project has enabled dozens of sports projects since 2010 in Bromsgrove.

The cash boost provided winter nets sessions at Alvechurch and Hopwood Cricket Club to encourage people to take part in cricket over the winter months.

It also provided extra sessions at Bromsgrove and Redditch Athletics club to get young people who were on their waiting list involved.

District councillor Michael Webb, the member responsible for leisure services, said: “If you’ve got an idea for expanding a sport or physical activity, there could be support available for you.

“And what’s more, there will now be extra chances to access funding for two more years. I hope our local sports clubs will continue to use it creatively to bring in even more opportunities for active recreation across the district.”

To receive funding applicants are expected to show how they would use the money.

It can be used to help cover the cost of coaches, incentives, equipment, facilities costs and more.

The council is now urging those who deliver or would like to deliver sport and physical activity to apply for the next round of funding, which is available for projects running until March 2015.

The deadline for applications is Monday September 15.

After this current round of Sportivate funding the next opportunity to apply is expected to be in early 2015 for projects which would run from April that year.

Sportivate is a nationwide Sport England campaign, in Bromsgrove it is delivered by the district council as part of the Sport Partnership Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
