A REDDITCH man has vowed to do all he can to raise cash for Birmingham Children's Hospital after doctors saved his daughter's life.

Liam Duffy and wife Charlotte had their perfect life turned upside down when they found out their daughter Amber, just seven months old, had heptoblastoma - a rare tumor that originates in cells in the liver.

After being ill for a length of time she was admitted to the Alexandra Hospital with what doctors thought was a huge infection, however, they could not figure out what exactly was wrong.

She was being treated for meningitis and septicaemia but doctors still didn't know what the problem was - all the while she was getting worse.

After four days an ultra sound finally found a mass on Amber's liver and she was rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Mr Duffy, a firefighter from Redditch, said: "For the rest of my days on this earth I will never forget our conversation with the doctor that resulted in the word 'cancer' being mentioned, from that split-second it felt like our world had ended, in a heartbeat our perfect life was no more.

"Our little girl was seeming to be clinging onto her little life and there was nothing we could do to help her. She was eventually diagnosed with heptoblastoma, she had a huge tumour on her liver the size of a grown man's fist.

"The following four months were by far the worst of our whole lives and no words can describe the pain and fear that our angel was going through hell at such a young age."

Amber had to endure six courses of chemotherapy over three months and had to have half of her liver removed.

Mr Duffy said: "I have no doubt in my mind that without the swift action of our local GP and staff at the paediatric ward at the Alex our little girl may not be here now.

"From the second we got to Birmingham Children's Hospital the staff worked tirelessly to get her whatever she needed as soon as physically possible. We will be eternally grateful forever to everyone involved and especially the amazing doctors who treated my Amber."

He added: "Over the four months of Amber's entire treatment we met some of the most amazing people and shared this terrible disease with other families."

Four months on and Amber is now on the road to recovery and Liam is trying to raise as much cash as possible for Birmingham Children's Hospital.

This Saturday, July 23 there will be charity car wash at Redditch Fire Station from 11am to 3pm.

Along with workmates from Redditch Fire Station, friends and family, Liam will be doing a sponsored parachute jump in September.

There are also a number of other events being planned.
