A CYCLE ride in memory of a teenager who died following complications from a heart condition raked in more than £10,000 for the British Heart Foundation.

Studley teen Jordan Smith, aged 16, was planning to cycle from his home in Studley to his grandparents in Weymouth, Dorset, with friend Simon Stanley but sadly died following a serious heart operation in June last year.

Following his death, Simon decided to complete the challenge in his memory and raise money for the charity.

He rallied a 29-strong team called 'Jord's Wey 150' who completed the two-day journey, setting off from Studley High School on Saturday, April 30 and arriving in Weymouth on May 1, which would have been Jordan's 17th birthday.

The cyclist took the exact route Jordan had planned.

The oldest rider was Jordan's grandad Maurice Desmond who is 71.

His mother Jo Desmond thanked Simon Stanley for organising the ride.

She said: "I can't put into words how all the support for this ride and the effort from the riders has helped me. Raising such a large amount of money in Jordan's memory is truly special. He was such a positive person who always made good of a bad situation and I hope to carry that on for him.

"He wouldn't want us to be too sad. He would be so proud, especially of his grandad," she added.

Jordan had a congenital heart condition that diagnosed when he was 11.

On March 19 last year he had a successful operation to treat his condition, the surgery took more than 12 hours and was performed at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

He was recovering well and was given the all clear in May but unfortunately, the following month, Jordan rapidly deteriorated and despite the doctors best efforts he passed away.

Jordan, a gifted skier, was planning to study sport at Henley in Arden College in September 2015 and his ambition was to qualify as a ski instructor.

So far the group have raised at least £10,500. To make a further donation visit JustGiving.com and type in Jord's Wey 150 Simon Stanley.
