A BEOLEY man has completed an amazing 1,500 mile trip, riding a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle from Kathmandu in Nepal to Lhasa in Tibet, via Everest base camp.

Brian Becker, director of BBTV, a local film production company, was asked by a tour company to make a short film of the trip for its website.

Mr Becker had the opportunity to combine his passion for film-making with his love of the classic motorbike, last made in Redditch in 1967 and now produced in India.

The trip was not without hazards, however.

Many of the roads and mountain passes were above the snow line at altitudes of about 18,000 feet, meaning altitude sickness could have been a real problem.

To combat this, Mr Becker undertook regular training sessions and swimming underwater to increase his lung efficiency.

His training paid off but another tour member was hospitalised with acute altitude sickness.

He said: “Motorcycling in Tibet is a constant challenge, with free range yaks and huge flocks of goats around every bend, not to mention constant landslides, flash floods and enormous holes in the road.”

Highlights of the trip were filmed using the latest miniature cameras attached to Mr Becker’s bike and helmet.

Asked if he was now tempted to buy a Royal Enfield Mr Becker said: “I think I’ll stick with my Triumph, the Enfield was an experience but motorcycle design has moved on a bit from the 1940s.”
