HUNDREDS of people are expected to flock to Alcester to celebrate St George's Day this weekend.

On Sunday, April 24, about 500 Warwickshire scouts will descend on the town for a St George's Day Parade headed by the Shirley Pipe Band, a traditional highland bagpipe band based in Solihull.

Youngsters will process from The Guide and Scout Centre in Moorfields Road, to School Road then Henley Street, Malt Mill Lane, Gas House Lane before turn right into the High Street and arriving at St Nicholas Church at 3pm for a service led by Reverend Adrian Guthrie.

At 3.45pm, the parade will reform in the High Street and walk via Church Street, Henley Street, School Road and Moorfields Road before returning to the Guide and Scout Centre where it will be dismissed.

Alcester Court Leet will be joining Sunday's event after cancelling their annual parade, due to take place on Saturday, following a predicted low turn out.

High Baliff Tim Forman said: "Surprisingly, it has been really difficult. As St George's Day is on a Saturday this year, we believed everybody would be interested but as its Shakespeare's birthday everyone is in Stratford for Shakespeare's birthday parade."
