THE clashing of swords may be heard around Alcester next month as the Romans are set to invade the town.

A free Roman celebration event will be taking place at Globe House on Saturday, May 14 with talks, activities, storytelling, treasure hunt, displays and crafts.

Between 10am and 4pm, there will be displays of swords and clothes, and children will be able to learn about Roman writing and take part in real archaeology- by washing 2,000 year old Roman pottery fragments.

There will be a mock dig, mosaic picture making, corn grinding, and metal Roman-style coins embossed with Emperor Claudius' profile.

Youngsters will also have the chance to meet a legionary, a professional heavy infantryman of the Roman army, and will also be the opportunity to have photos taken in front of a Colosseum backdrop.

Laurence Thatcher, chairman of the Alcester Heritage Trust, which runs the Roman Alcester Museum, said: "The Roman Alcester Celebration is to celebrate the re opening of the Roman Museum - it`s a mini festival really.

"We hope that families will come out for the day and that local people will enjoy having their photos taken in front of the Colosseum."
