AN Alcester man who was found with 60 cannabis plants in his bedroom has been jailed for eight months.

At Warwick Crown Court Faroq Kazi, aged 47, of Ten Acres, was jailed for eight months after he pleaded guilty to the production of cannabis.

Prosecutor Martin Liddiard pointed out that Kazi had entered his plea on the basis that he was growing the plants for someone else, who he named, who would have come and collected them.

They had been found when the police, on an unrelated matter, went to Kazi’s home in August last year.

"One officer went into a bedroom, which was pitch black, so he put his torch on which revealed 60 cannabis plants in a relatively early stage of growth.

"It is now accepted he was growing them for someone else, either to be paid or to pay off a debt to the other man.

"But he has a significant role because he is running and operating it," said Mr Liddiard.

And he pointed out that Kazi had a conviction in 2003 for possessing cannabis with intent to supply it, for which he was given an 18-month suspended sentence.

Julian Lynch, defending, said: “He was not going to be supplying the cannabis himself. He was plainly under the influence of this man.”

And he argued: “The custodial sentence which is called for is one that is capable of suspension.”

But before jailing Kazi immediately, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano said: "The real problem is that he’s been here before."
