A YOUNG Alcester man is helping disadvantaged and disabled children in Sri Lanka by teaching English, performing arts, dance and music.

Matt Newby, aged 20, touched down on Colombo International Airport on July 15 to begin a month’s placement with youngsters on Island near India.

The University of Derby theatre studies graduate arranged the placement with SL Volunteers, an organisation which only accept applicants with a depth of knowledge in the field of performance.

Mr Newby said: “Luckily, I have been acting since knee high; I have also been a regular cast member and more recently acting coach of the local Alcester Junior Drama and Youth Theatre.

The scheme aims to teach the students a range of skills which will help them throughout their lives.

“English is one of the world’s most spoken languages, learning it will give them immeasurable advantages in the future,” he added.

“Similarly, the performing arts help them express themselves, boost communication skills whilst enhancing presentation and confidence.

Speaking on his family's connection to the town, Mr Newby, said: “My family has lived in Alcester for over a decade and pride themselves on actively supporting the local community, all of us working on the high street for years.

“Dawns Little Shop is my mother’s namesake and we have worked hard to raise money for the youth theatre, schools and town ventures since our first year in town.
