A DONKEY-led procession will be held in Alcester to commemorate Easter.

On Palm Sunday, March 29 members of local churches will begin the walk in the recreation ground on Stratford Road with a short act of worship at 9.40am.

Then the group will move on to Gas House Lane, Malt Mill Lane, turn left into Church Street and then cross the road opposite the gates at St Nicholas' Church.

During the service, worshippers will sing the hymn Make way, make way for Christ the King before going into church for the Palm Sunday celebration service, which will begin around 10am.

Reverend Adrian Guthrie, rector of Alcester Minster, said: “Palm Sunday processions are held in many towns to mark the start of Holy Week, and I am delighted that we are able to do this in Alcester this year.

“The donkey’s presence reminds us that Jesus entered Jerusalem peacefully and in great humility and helps us to focus on the important aspects of the week ahead.

“Everyone is welcome to join us for the procession and the service in church, where we will be distributing palm crosses as usual, and for any of our Easter services.”

The event has been organised by Alcester Minster Churches.
