FOR the first time since 1954, the number of letters and cards going outward through Redditch Post Office was expected to exceed 100,000 in a day on Monday.

The total had been building up a steadily, from 55,000 last Thursday to 80,000 on Friday and 88,000 on Saturday.

On a normal day there is a maximum of 12,000 letters and cards at Redditch Post Office.

Generally speaking, the daily average has been 3,000 higher than last year, the Head Postmaster Mr ML Williams told a reporter, with the public responding well to appeals to post early.

The public had also been most cooperative in the matter of addressing their cards.

There were fewer bad or incomplete addresses this year than usual.
