FORMER government minister, Rachel Maclean said Boris Johnson’s resignation was the right thing to do for a ‘fresh start’.
Boris Johnson finally succumbed to the mounting pressure from his government and resigned as the Conservative Party leader on July 7.
He will remain as Prime Minister until a successor is in place, expected to be by the time of the Conservative Party conference in October.
Redditch MP, Rachel Maclean, resigned from her government role as safeguarding minister on July 6 along with a host of other MPs including Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid.
In her resignation letter, Rachel wrote that recent events demonstrate while the Prime Minister remains in office the “woefully low rate of prosecutions for sexual offences” will not improve.
She then asked Boris Johnson to step aside to provide the country with “the leadership it so badly needs."
After Boris Johnson’s formal resignation, Ms Maclean said it was “the only choice in order to do right by the country”.
She added: “We need a fresh start and a new leader who can restore confidence in government, and most importantly provide our country with the leadership it requires.
“From the backbenches, I will continue my laser-like focus on the Alex by fighting to return a maternity and children’s service and more investment.”
