RESIDENTS living in Wishaw Close are getting hot under the collar with a nearby social club and have pleaded with it to move its new smoking shelter further away from their homes.

In a letter to South Redditch Social Club, the Greenlands residents complained that because of the close proximity of the shelter to their houses, they were often "assaulted by loud discussions using obnoxious language, which educate our families of the social and marital status of many of the persons known to your patrons".

The letter goes on to say that although the residents respect smokers rights, their right to privacy had been "left in tatters" as individuals smoking under the shelter peer into neighbouring gardens.

The residents have also complained about smashed and intact pint glasses strewn across the pavement, causing a health and safety risk to pedestrians, particularly small children.

The complainants claim they were not informed of the proposed location, nor were they asked for their opinions.

The letter states: "May we suggest your building has four sides which are available to locate this shelter.

"The left side faces a football field - by far the more suitable location for this shelter - the rear is facing allotments, the front faces the car park and finally, the right is facing homes - the least suitable location but the one that has been chosen."

Nobody from the social club was available for comment as the Advertiser went to press.
