THE Polish victim of a gang assault on Bates Hill, Redditch, is convinced the attack was racially motivated.

The 25-year-old factory worker, who does not wish to be named, has also criticised police and hospital staff for failing to take the incident seriously.

Through a friend acting as an interpreter, he told the Advertiser: "I definitely think it was a racist attack," adding he could not see or eat for four days afterwards.

According to the victim, the incident happened between two CCTV cameras and police were also given the registration number of the car the attackers were driving but they have not yet been caught.

The victim, who has not been out at night since the attack, said: "It's hard to feel safe when there are cameras and things like this happen."

He was assaulted in the early hours of Sunday, April 1 after accidentally bumping a red car when he parked his Volkswagen Passat near a takeaway.

When he got out to check there was no damage, a gang of men approached, an argument followed and a man attacked him through the open car window.

The car's windscreen was smashed and the driver's door damaged.

The main offender was described as a white man of medium build, aged about 27 with short, fair hair.

He had a round face and protrouding cheekbones and was wearing a light coloured top.

He was with a gang of seven or more black men when he approached the car.

After suffering severe facial bruising, the victim is also unhappy that he was given two paracetemol and told to go home after waiting for five hours in the Alexandra Hospital's A&E department.

He thought his injuries warranted a brain scan or being kept in overnight and feels, as a Pole, he was treated differently.

A spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said it did not comment on individual cases and if the patient wrote to the trust outlining his concerns, it would certainly investigate.

Insp Ian Joseph, of Redditch police, said: "Our investigation into this assault is moving forward.

"We've already secured CCTV tapes that we're examining for evidence and further witnesses and we've made inquiries with West Midlands Police regarding the vehicle seen near the incident.

"We will be in touch with the victim to keep him informed of the progress we are making.

"Meanwhile, we'd encourage any further witnesses to call us at Redditch police station on 08457 444888 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
