AN appeal has been made by the BBC for people in Worcestershire to get behind a project to be carried out by the DIY SOS team.

The BBC One programme transforms the lives of families in need with the help of the local communities they are in, and is hoping to do the same in Eckington, near Pershore.

However, the project remains in doubt as the team are struggling to find local tradesman and suppliers to back the build. It is the first time the team has struggled to find help, with the build set to get underway on Tuesday, June 30.

Presenter of the show Nick Knowles put out an appeal to the people of Worcestershire on Twitter.

He said: "Worcester folks who know suppliers, journalists and builders - this is the first time where we’ve struggled to find materials donated to DIY SOS, HELP!".

A Twitter account for the programme, @DIYSOS, posted: "Are there any builders merchants in Worcestershire who would like to get involved with our build? #struggling.

"Are there any cabinet makers in Worcestershire who would like to help on our build."

It is understood the BBC requires building material of all types, and tradesman in all fields are still needed to give up their time to help.

However, The Pershore branch of Travis Perkins has stepped up to the plate, and has so far offered materials to be used for the agricultural aspect of the project, free of charge.

The company will also help out further where it can, also free of charge.

Steven Ham, assistant manager of the Pershore branch of Travis Perkins, said: "We have so far supplied materials free of charge, to help with the agricultural part of the build, and have offered more help if they need it too. That too will be free of charge.

"When they (BBC) spoke to us they seemed to be in a bit of an urgent state.

"We're more than happy to help out, as that's the whole point of the programme. People giving up their time to help a family in need."
