A PENNILESS Redditch man is set to make his second attempt travelling the world on a motorbike to fulfil his wife’s dying wish.

John Goode will be bluffing, begging and borrowing his way throughout the trip, with one of his first missions being to get a free ticket onto a ferry leaving Dover.

Resourceful Mr Goode, will be eating road kill in order to survive, sleeping rough and not staying in any campsites or hotels during the journey, as he explains that due to his finances, he either does this or doesn’t take the trip.

Tragically, Mr Goode’s wife Michelle, aged 44, died from pneumonia on January 6, 2009 after suffering from myotonic dystrophy, a debilitating genetic condition.

The couple spent 18 happy years together where they often discussed travelling the world but sadly, due to Michelle's disability, they could never take the trip.

“We knew it would never be possible, so it remained our pipe dream.

“One of the last things she said to me is ‘you can go on that trip around the world.

“‘Promise me you will try and take me with you in spirit,'” Mr Goode, from Batchley, explained.

After a year and several months dealing with Michelle’s death, Mr Goode finally set off on his first attempt around the world from Derby in October 2010, having never left set foot out of France before.

At first he was accompanied by friends but they later returned home after deciding the trip wasn’t for them.

After riding for several days and readjusting to being alone, Mr Goode was thoroughly enjoying it.

He said: “I can remember thinking ‘this is fantastic’- talk about a duck to water.

“The buzz has always been there, simmering away in the background - especially when looking around at the dreary red brick Victorian housing, tarmac streets and back yards in the Meadows area of Nottingham, where I was born and lived in for many years.

“I used to gaze out of my third floor terraced house window at the clouds low on the horizon and wonder if that was what real mountains looked like.”

Sadly, only a few weeks later, he was take seriously ill with a lung condition in Southern Mauritania and after reaching Dakar in Senegal, he was forced to abandon the bike and return home.

He finally got the bike back about three months later. It was badly damaged, he patched it up and then raced it before eventually selling it on to another racer.

After his first attempt, he worked part time to make money to pay for a new bike and equipment but has since quit so he can prepare for the trip.

Now, the 60-year-old is motivated to succeed as he “made a promise” and that the idea of trying again has been “burning away inside”.

He will be leaving on Sunday, June 21 after visiting his family.

His equipment cost him just £400 and he has used a lot of the same ideas as last time, including a shower and table located on his bike.

He added: “I am confident I have got an angel on my shoulder.

“I carry her with me in the form of a homemade pendant, always worn around my neck, and she always rides with me.”

The trip will take over two years to complete and Mr Goode will be regularly keeping people updated about what he is doing with a diary, pictures and video footage.
