HELPING the Craig Evans Appeal install swings for the disabled at Redditch parks is the aim of a runner competing in the YMCA 10km race.

Richard Field, 22, from Batchley, a housing advice officer at Redditch Council, decided to run in aid of the appeal after it helped to buy a tricycle for a colleague's disabled son.

"That got me thinking this is a really good cause," he said.

Richard has previously run a half marathon in Worcester to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and would one day like to run the London Marathon in aid of the appeal.

In conjunction with the Advertiser, the appeal was set up to raise funds for a £10,000 electric wheelchair for 26-year-old Craig, who had Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Sadly he died a fortnight before receiving the wheelchair but wanted the fund to continue helping others in his memory.

The swings, to help disabled youngsters experience the joy of playing, are planned for both Arrow Valley Country Park and Morton Stanley Park.

To sponsor Richard, make a donation to the Craig Evans Appeal, HSBC account number 51793330, sort code 403807, or contact him on 07768 127646.

The 10km race is one of four events Redditch YMCA is holding on May 19 in Arrow Valley Park.

There is also a toddle woddle, a mini 2km and main 6km run.
