YOUNG poets from Inkberrow and Bromsgrove have had their work included in an anthology of poetry published by Avoncroft Museum.

Pupils from Inkberrow First School and Bromsgrove School had their poems printed in ‘Between Brick and Wood’ after working with Worcestershire poet laureate Maggie Doyle.

Both groups of students visited the museum before using the historic buildings and structures as inspiration for their poems, before Ms Doyle selected which ones should be included in the anthology.

She said: “I was very happy to support Avoncroft Museum’s initiative and run workshops to encourage children to write their own poetry. , “Children don’t actually realise, that they have already encountered and enjoyed poetry, by singing nursery rhymes or by listening to rap music. They may have enjoyed reading rhyming books such as ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson who incidentally, is the current Children’s Laureate.”

Sharon Cole, a year two teacher from Inkberrow First School, added: “The visit to Avoncroft Museum fitted in with our topic, ‘Through the Keyhole’ which looked at houses through the ages, and Maggie’s workshop was inspirational for our poetry work. It was fantastic that the children could write poems based on first-hand experience of what they had seen and the emotions created by visiting the museum.”

‘Between Brick and Wood’ has been published to raise funds for Avoncroft Museum’s Golden Jubilee Appeal, which works to save threatened historic buildings from across the West Midlands. It is on sale from the museum shop for £5.99.
