Relegated County aim to finish year on a high

Redditch Advertiser: Relegated County aim to finish year on a high Relegated County aim to finish year on a high

DIRECTOR of cricket Steve Rhodes insists relegated Worcestershire are determined to finish their LV= County Championship Division One campaign on a high note.

The County saw their two-year stay in the top-flight ended last week following an innings and 202-run defeat against Warwickshire, who were crowned champions, at New Road.

But Worcestershire head to Somerset today (10.30am) aiming to sign off with what would be only their second win of the season and one which could still see them leap-frog second-from-bottom Lancashire.

“There’s a lot of pride to play for to finish in a positive light,” Rhodes said. “We are playing Somerset and it is always challenging going down to Taunton but we will be looking to finish on a high and keep a smile on the players’ and supporters’ faces.

“We will be going out there to try and get maximum points. We need to make sure we are up for the game and give it our best shot.”

Rhodes has recalled England Under 19 all-rounder Aneesh Kapil to his 12-man squad in place of Matt Pardoe but Gareth Andrew has failed a fitness test on a calf injury.

The County director of cricket added: “There are still a lot of people within the club with a lot to prove. “People like Phil Hughes, who will want to finish off the season in style — as will all of the other batters, who will want to get their run tallies, aggregates and averages up.

“There will be no just going through the motions.”

All out for 212 D'oliveira made 2. Can someone tell me why he is playing ?
9 wickets for Rehmann . Already worcs are in a position of being defensive.
The only solace is that the good people of worcester do not have to suffer this indignity

Could it be his name I would have loved to
Bat against him. By the way its about time we dropped this young team tag there not that young anymore. The truth is they are just not good enough, I doubt they would struggle to get into the Nomads side.

D'Oliveira has been quietly impressive in most of his outings this year. The gap between the very best club standard cricket and first class cricket is actually huge. Methinks that your knowledge of the game could be written on the back of a fag packet with room for the complete works of Dickens.

Dandey what we have here is typical behaviour/view of a supporter that cannot see the obvious . I think that the term is 'blinkered' . What has been apparent during the last 2 seasons is the denial of the fact that the side is inadequate and is managed by the inadequate. So we are left with diminishing gates and receipts . A last hope of financial impetus from the development of the site will be wasted without good management and player development . We dont need the ostrich syndrome of denial we have to face facts. And as the Stranglers famously sang 'somethin' better change'

Dandey's assertion that Nomads players are on a par with the current county staff is patently absurd. It's hard to have a serious debate when such an idiotic comment is proffered.

Anyway, here goes. We know that next season we will be without Solanki, Scott and Manuel. My money would also be on Choudhry going too. So there should be some money for replacement players. We need another keeper as Cox is far from the finished article. At least one additional batsman is needed and two bowlers - one seamer and one spnner.

I suppose there will be te usual call for heads to roll, starting with that of the coach. But ask yourself this - if it is right to apportion some of the blame for this season's performace on Rhodes, then surely it is right to give him some of the credit for getting us promoted in 2010 and keeping us in Div1 last season. On that basis, he is still in credit - just.

Doosra I agree with your 2nd paragraph
Rhodes could be just in credit but I do feel the whole coaching staff needs to looked at very hard indeed and changes do need to be made
