NO-ONE knows when Scottish football will get back under way, but Celtic defender Greg Taylor is determined to ensure that he is fit and firing for when the lockdown is lifted.

The former Kilmarnock full-back, who completed a move to Parkhead last summer, says that he and his team-mates are still doing everything that they can to maintain their fitness levels during the SPFL's hiatus.

And the Scotland internationalist has insisted that while adhering to a strict training regimen is more difficult due to the Covid-19 crisis, the intensity of practise has only dipped a little.

"We are pretty close to what we’d usually be doing each day," he told the official Celtic website. "We’re just missing the quality time with the ball. We all have a strict daily routine during the season and that doesn’t stop now.

"If we can keep our fitness high then it’ll help when we eventually come out of lockdown and get back to usual life.

"I’ve been starting my training earlier than I usually would. I do some HIT [High Intensity Training] first thing to help me wake up and get a wee sweat on.

"After that, I’ll get into the programme that [coaching staff] Jack Nayler and John Currie have given us and then go for a run afterwards.

"We have heart-rate monitors so the backroom staff can monitor all the data and the club have supplied us with gym equipment like static bikes and all the nutrition stuff we need, including vitamins and supplements."

Some players could grow complacent with the reduction in oversight that has accompanied the coronavirus lockdown, but Taylor is thriving under the all-seeing-eye of Celtic's new approach to coaching.

The 22-year-old revealed that Neil Lennon's squad have been competing to post the fastest time in a weekly 5k challenge - and as the current holder of the record, he hopes that his performances will inspire his team-mates to go one better and best him.

"We have wee competitions between us all," he added. "Jack and John have us doing 5ks and posting our times.

"No-one wants to be left behind so that really pushes you on. I’m holding the title at the moment and that’s probably stirred a few boys so they’ll be coming for me this week.

"I had looked at Jonny Hayes’ time before I headed out and I knew he was a good one to try and beat. I managed to keep my pace quicker than his so I knew I was in for a good chance of winning it.

"I did it on the streets around where I live and I managed to get around 17 mins 31 seconds so all the boys will be stepping it up to try and beat that this week."
