The Beacon Sunday league's first ever veterans cup final has been set for next month.

This season saw the popular afternoon league introduce an over-30s section with no fewer than ten teams taking up the challenge, writes Dave McLean.

With teams playing once or twice a month the member clubs have been chasing glory in two cup competitions.

Qualifying group games in the Roger Brindley Cup have now been completed, resulting in unbeaten winners Springvale Vets and Wednesbury Athletic reaching the inaugural final, at AFC Wulfrunians ground, on Sunday, March 8 (3pm).

Both finalists get the opportunity to become the first holders of the trophy, named in memory of league stalwart Roger Brindley who served the league as treasurer and secretary until his death in 2017.

The second veterans competition is the Challenge Trophy, currently in its early stages and again played off in two qualifying groups with the overall winners to contest the final.

Looking ahead to next season and the Beacon league is accepting applications for the 2020/21 campaign.

General secretary David Clinton confirmed they had already received enquiries from interested teams.

Those interested in joining either the main Championship, Development Division or veterans sections should call David on 07964 730275.

The entire Beacon league programme for February 9 was postponed due to the adverse weather conditions.
