FROM Worcester Warriors’ seven-try mauling of Bristol Bears in October to Northampton Saints handing out a pre-Christmas stuffing at Sixways.

There have been a number of highs and lows during a Gallagher Premiership season that saw Worcester avoid the drop and register 46 points – their second highest tally in their top-flight history.

But what were the incidents that helped to shape Warriors’ league campaign as they finished in the bottom three again?

We pick out five season-defining moments.

WEIR’S AGONISING MISS IN SEASON OPENER…

How different Worcester’s campaign could have panned out had Duncan Weir nailed THAT last-gasp drop goal against Wasps?

It feels harsh to knock the Scot whose nerveless kicking displays have been vital to keep his side in the Premiership this term.

But had Weir stroked the ball home with the last kick of an absorbing Midlands derby on September 1 Alan Solomons’ side would have got off to the winning start they so desired and perhaps had the confidence to push on.

Instead, Worcester suffered an agonising 21-20 defeat and went on to lose to Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons to slump to the foot of the table.

Fortunately for Warriors Weir bounced back in fine style.

SUPER TED BURSTS ONTO THE SCENE AT TIGERS…

You will be hard-pressed to find a better Premiership debut than the one Ted Hill produced against Leicester Tigers on September 23.

With Sam Lewis forced off due to injury Hill was suddenly called into action on 26 minutes and soon announced himself on the big stage.

After a stunning first half by Warriors that saw them notch four tries Hill powered over on 53 minutes to extend his team’s lead to 35-10.

That close-range score suggested Hill belonged at this level but it was his next try that elevated his status even further.

In a dramatic twist of events at Welford Road Warriors almost let the match slip away as Tigers came from 37-10 down to draw level at 37-37.

However Worcester refused to give up and in the final play of the match Francois Hougaard fed Hill who burrowed over in the corner to secure their first win of the season.

REINACH’S INTERCEPT LEADS TO HUMBLING…

A victory over Northampton could have moved Warriors who had thrashed Bristol 52-7 and beaten Harlequins 20-13 in their two previous home games as high as sixth on December 21.

But they were sent crashing to a sorry 32-6 defeat that saw them slip just one point above the relegation zone.

The key moment in the clash came on 58 minutes. Trailing 12-6 Bryce Heem looked set to score when he burst through only to be tackled metres from the try-line by Cobus Reinach.

The scrum-half then popped up again seconds later to intercept Hougaard’s pass before running the length of the field to score.

It was a huge blow to Worcester who gifted Saints a further try when Weir presented the ball on a plate for Luther Burrell to breakaway and score.

The result also proved a turning point in Northampton’s campaign as they went on to finish in fourth place.

LEWIS COMES TO WARRIORS’ RESCUE…

Having suffered a demorilsing 17-6 loss at rivals Newcastle Falcons the pressure was mounting on Warriors when they visited fellow strugglers Bristol on March 23.

Worcester responded well as they took a 27-18 lead at the start of the second half before Bears turned up with the heat courtesy of a converted try by Callum Sheedy on 66 minutes.

With Ben Te’o in the sin-bin the hosts pushed for the winner but Ian Madigan missed a penalty from 50 metres out before Sam Lewis pulled off a try-saving tackle.

In the dying seconds Andy Uren sprinted clear after snatching the ball from Hougaard. But crucially Uren was brought down before Lewis’ thumping challenge on Dan Thomas saw the ball go loose.

Had Thomas gone over to snatch victory Warriors would have gone level on points with a resurgent Falcons at the bottom.

STRONG START IS SPRINGBOARD TO SURVIVAL…

Hovering one place and three points above the drop zone Warriors needed to pull a big performance out of the bag against Sale Sharks on April 13.

It was never going to be easy against a Sale team that were looking to secure a place in the European Champions Cup but Worcester’s strong start set the tone. From the word the first whistle Warriors got on top and charged 17-0 ahead thanks to tries from Lewis and Chris Pennell inside the first 18 minutes.

Led by superb stand-in skipper Marco Mama, Worcester then kicked on in the second half with a hat-trick from Josh Adams to clinch a 39-17 victory.

It was arguably Warriors’ best showing of the season and put them on the brink of survival which they sealed a week later when they defeated third-placed Gloucester 27-20.
