A PENALTY a minute from time left Woodrush licking their wounds after a narrow 15-14 league defeat at Old Coventrians.

But there was better news for league rivals Kings Norton who ran out 28-11 winners at Copsewood.

Woodrush made the perfect start with Steve Smart scoring and then converting two tries in the opening 20 minutes to hand the visitors a 14-0 lead.

But Old Covs clawed their way back into contention with a try two minutes before the break, a score that rejuvenated the home team.

Further scores followed but it needed a penalty a minute from time to wrap up the points.

Coach Matt Elwell admitted he was disappointed to lose so late in the game but added there were positives to come from the match.

"There was an excellent debut for second row Mark Buckey and we dominated the line-outs and scrums," he said.

"Lessons need to be learnt and learnt quickly. We would have come away with the points if it hadn't been for our second half naivety."

Kings recorded their first league points of the season with a convincing display in Coventry.

Jamie Clayton slotted over the first points, a fifth minute penalty, on his way to a personal tally of 23 points.

He bagged a try on 17 minutes before Copsewood replied with an unconverted try and drop goal to leave the score at 13-8 at the break.

Kings added to their tally early in the second half through speedy debutant winger Greg Cole with the rest of the points coming from the boot of Clayton.

Jan van der Walt should have added another try late on but lost the ball when it was easier to ground it.

Kings are at home to Shipston on Saturday while Woodrush play host to Spartans.
