THERE were mixed fortunes for Redditch racer Andy Burbidge at Cadwell park at the weekend, bagging a second position before crashing.

The race ace went into the event nine points adrift of leader Ryan Tyres in the Honda CB500 Championships.

Burbidge qualified in pole and then opened up a lead only for the race to be stopped on the eighth lap after Tyres had crashed out.

It was decided to re-run the race but, low on fuel, the Redditch rider had to be content with second place, crawling over the line on fumes.

The result meant the championship lead going into the second race.

And that soon evolved into a battle between Burbidge and the two 16-year-olds, Tyres and John Simpson.

Burbidge finished in third but managed to set a new lap record in the process.

Another red flag in the opening race on Sunday saw another restart only this time Burbidge took on extra fuel.

Within two laps he had opened up a five second lead only to crash at the mountain, the bike flying into the air before landing just inches from the sprawled Redditch rider.

A spare bike was offfered for the final race but with Burbidge nursing a shoulder injury he had to settle for sixth place.

That means he is nearly 20 points short of the championship leader going to the last race of the year at Mallory Park at the end of October.
