REDDITCH United manager Simon Redhead admits the fixture pile-up is going to test his small and inexperienced squad.

United still have half of their matches to play in Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division after two months of weather frustration.

Saturday’s clash at league leaders Leamington and last night’s game at Arlesey fell victim to the snow, while there are concerns that this weekend’s home match against Bideford Town (3pm ko) will not go ahead, depending on the conditions.

United, who also entertain Gosport Borough next Tuesday (7.45pm ko), have not kicked a ball in anger since January 12.

With Redditch currently operating a one-in, one-out transfer policy, the squad only boasts a handful of experienced players.

And an intense period of fixtures is the last thing Redhead wants as the club seek to ease their relegation worries.

He said: “There is very little we can do about the snow,” said Redditch’s manager.

“It has affected the entire league but it means we’ve still got half our games to play.

“That is going to put some pressure on our squad, which is not the biggest and is inexperienced.

“We’ve been unlucky as we’ve played a lot of the best teams but the matches against the sides around us have been postponed.”

Redhead bolstered his defence this week with the addition of former Kidderminster Harriers youth team product Zac Costello.

Costello has been a free agent while he concentrates on his studies but has been tempted back for a second spell at the club.

Despite the new addition, Redhead is weighing up whether he will have to release another player from his squad.

He said: “Zac’s still in very good shape.

“It may mean we have to let someone go, but we have been plagued with injuries at the back so we will have to see.”

Redhead is also keen to add a striker as attacker Danny Edwards is playing on a week-by-week basis from Worcester City.

Meanwhile, chairman Chris Swan said that talks with Redditch Borough Council over proposed ground improvements are still on-going.

The chairman has prioritised the addition of a 3G pitch in order to bolster the club’s options and increase revenue.
