THE way is now clear for outdoor markets in Tenbury and throughout Worcestershire to start up again.

The town had markets in the scout hut and at the Round Market that will now be able to restart.

Worcestershire is welcoming the reopening of outdoor markets and car forecourts following a government announcement.

The government announced that outdoor markets and car forecourts can be reopened following social distancing guidelines.

This also came with news that non-essential retail businesses will be able to open with social distancing measures from Monday, June 15.

“Outdoor markets are a big part of Worcestershire life and many of our rural businesses depend on them,” said Ken Pollock, who represents Tenbury on Worcestershire County Council, where he is also cabinet member for economy and infrastructure.

“We have a number of towns in the county that have thriving outdoor markets, so this is a welcome step towards getting Worcestershire reopen for business.

“Outdoor markets increase footfall to our high streets so paired with the reopening of non-essential shops on June 15 we hope that this will offer a boost to our towns.

“Traders will already be making plans to make sure that their premises are safe for reopening. The Council and our local district council colleagues are ready to advise and support in this process.”

A survey of businesses found that 70 per cent of businesses cited lack of cash flow as a key way in which their business has been affected.

The government announcement will allow retail businesses such as clothes shops, toy shops, furniture shops and electronic shops to reopen on June 15 with social distancing measures in place. Businesses like hairdressers, cafes and pubs will remain closed.
