A PROCESSION took place to remember a former Wychavon councillor who has been described as a much loved "key figure".

The Journal recently reported on the death of David Folkes MBE who was remember at his funeral that was held last Saturday, (May 16).

Only a limited number were allowed to attend the funeral service, due to the current coronavirus guidance.

But prior to the service at The Vale Crematorium, the family and church wanted to give Broadway residents the chance to pay their respects to the 85-year-old.

A procession was organised and was originally only planned to go through Broadway, from St Michael and All Angels C Of E Church to Broadway High Street.

Such was the large turn out, with people on their driveways to ensure social distancing, it continued on into Leamington Road.

Reverend Michelle Ward, priest in Charge of Broadway with Wickhamford parishes, said: "We processed through Broadway as the church is closed because of Covid 19 regulations to remember and celebrate the life of David Folkes MBE.

"He was our verger and a chorister since he was eight years old, only missing a church service when he was on duty with the RAF.

"The streets were lined, (police were told before the event) and everyone was two metres apart, with salutes for him at the war memorial.

"He was a stalwart, a key figure, everybody knew him."

Mr Folkes was born and bred in Broadway and was an instrumental part of the village, serving as parish council chairman for 24 years. He was also chairman of Broadway Royal British Legion for many years, and the district’s poppy day organiser.

Mr Folkes was also Wychavon District councillor for 23 years and a governor at Broadway First School.

He is survived by wife Gill, daughters Caroline and Christine and grandchildren Eleanor, Martha, Daisy and Eddie.
