TWO animal-loving sisters from the city have managed to complete a marathon to raise money for the RSPCA during the lockdown.

Olivia and Florence O’Brien, from Worcester, completed the epic challenge by running 78 laps near to where they live, using a relay system.

They pushed any discomfort aside and thought of the animals during the most difficult laps towards the end.

Eight-year-old Olivia said: “I just kept thinking every step I take is one step closer to the finish line, and one step closer to helping the RSPCA.”

Seven-year-old Florence said: “It was tough but I kept on going because I thought about all the animals.”

Proud mum Jenny O’Brien said: “At a school dress-up day, Olivia went dressed as an RSPCA inspector and she got invited to the RSPCA Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire’s branch, The Holdings, and knew they needed money donations.

“Both of them have always loved animals and we have pets at home.”

The original target was £100 but, so far, the marathon, which took the pair a week to complete, has raised £790.

A spokesman for The Holdings said: “We are eternally grateful to both Olivia and Florence for donating towards our cause.

“They have shown ingenuity and passion in their goal to raise much needed funds for our ongoing work – they are our heroes.

“The money raised will be used for veterinary fees which is still one of our biggest outlays – we are continuing to look after animals that come in with specific welfare needs.”

Jenny added: “I’m so proud - they’ve been so enthusiastic and motivated, and were up and ready to go even in the rain.

“It’s been a wonderful thing to do in this strange time, a very selfless challenge for such young children.”

Worcester city councillor Richard Udall said: “As an animal lover, I’m delighted by what they’ve achieved.

“They are model citizens of the future.

“Thanks for helping animals in need in Worcestershire - my dog Murphy has asked me to pass on his thanks too!”

The RSPCA Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire’s branch is run by a board of trustees, which ensures all money donated goes directly to benefit animals
