Seventy five years ago, on May 8, 1945, the Allied forces’ war with Germany was officially declared over.
Victory in Europe – VE day – arrived a week after the death of Adolf Hitler.
The people of Britain have celebrated the date ever since, though because of coronavirus restrictions we cannot hold the usual fetes and street parties, or official commemorations that had been planned.
We are, though, lucky to have many photographs from Hereford businessman Tony Williams, who was a keen amateur photographer and documented life in Herefordshire in the 1940s.
We will be showcasing some of them in our 12-page VE Day 75th anniversary special supplement in the Hereford Times on Thursday (May 7). Arrange free delivery of the Hereford Times by calling 0800 9530227.
We would love to hear from you if you are marking the day in lockdown. Perhaps you are decorating your home with Union flags, or having a VE Day tea with your family.
Do you share a birthday with VE Day or are you perhaps turning 75 on Friday, May 8? You may even have VE Day anniversary pictures from the past that deserve another airing.
Email your pictures to: news@herefordtimes.com adding ‘ve day’ to the subject line.
