THREE Counties Farming Awards partner the Royal Three Counties Show has had to cancel this year’s flagship event, which was due to coincide with the presentation of this year’s Three Counties Farming Awards, due to the coronavirus but show organisers are working with the awards team to reschedule a grand awards evening.

Diana Walton, head of shows for the Three Counties, described the situation, which has meant CountryTastic in April and the RHS Spring Festival which usually takes place in May are also cancelled, as “absolutely horrific.”

“It’s horrendous. There isn’t any way around it. It’s absolutely horrific because we have put our hearts and souls into these events,” said Diana.

However, Diana, and Sue Griffiths, awards organiser for Newsquest, publisher of Three Counties Farmer, the Hereford Times and other publications across the three counties, are hoping the virus can be eradicated by the autumn, and the awards can be rescheduled for then.

The Malvern Autumn Show is still scheduled to go ahead on the weekend of September 26 and 27 and it is hoped the Malvern Farming Conference will go ahead as planned on November 19.

Diana said: “I think we will do anything to support our industries; both agricultural and horticultural because everyone is going to have a hard couple of years ahead.

“We totally recognise the importance of the Three Counties Farming Awards.”

Sue added: “We are working with Three Counties to look at a postponement date for the awards, which we are hoping will be in the autumn.

“Farming is one of the things that really needs to keep going. We need food on the table. The awards are really important to recognise the vital role of farmers in feeding the nation.”

The awards were due to close for entries on Thursday however the deadline for entries has been extended until further notice and judging will now take place later this year.

Categories include, sheep, cattle, pig, fruit/hop, conservation, poultry, arable, young farmer, farming hero, family run farm, farming contractor and outstanding achievement.
