ONE of Worcester’s largest events is still scheduled to go ahead, despite the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Organisers say the Worcester City Run, scheduled for September, will still go ahead “as things stand”.

A key feature of this year’s City Run will be athletics legend Paula Radcliffe’s Families on Track initiative, which gives family groups the opportunity to work together to complete a 10k distance in relay fashion.

Paula has adapted the concept into ‘Families at Home’ to help folk stay active at home.

She said: “This is a big initiative to help keep families sane and active while in isolation.

“It is a time which can be quite distressing especially for young children who maybe don’t understand what is going on.

“Being physically active can help you cope with things psychologically.”

The former team GB runner said she hoped the city run could still go ahead this year having taken part in 2014.

She said: “It is a fantastic activity with everyone in the city coming out to watch or take part.

“When I did it, my daughter took part in the kids’ runs and she loved it. It is such a picturesque city and scenic place to run as well.”

Families at Home differs from Families on Track in that it does not have to involve running and can instead be a series of differnet exercises the whole family can take part in.

To take part in Families at Home, there are several key steps: Name your team, choose your distance and measure out your laps

When the time starts, each member will take it in turns to complete laps until your chosen distance has been achieved.

You don’t all have to compete the same distance as long as you all cross the finish line together.

Worcester’s 10k City Run is one of the main events in the city’s calendar, with roads closed as thousands of runners descend on the city centre.

Last year’s race saw more than 4,000 runners take part in the Worcester City Half Marathon, 10K and Young Athletes Run, organised in a partnership between Worcester City Council and Events of the North.
