A HUSBAND and wife from Malvern are stuck in Australia, unable to get home because of coronavirus.

Tim and Philippa Charlesworth, from Great Malvern, have been in Sydney for a month staying in an AirBnB.

They are stranded and are calling for the government to help bring them home.

Mrs Charlesworth said: "We are stuck in Sydney due to nearly all but one airline pulling out. The only one operating is Qatar and they are charging £12,000 a ticket.

"The Foreign Office travel advice is to leave the country but there is no real guidance. We know we are living in a pandemic, but I do think someone from the government needs to address the British citizens stuck overseas.

"We have set up a Facebook page to help travellers: Support uk in Australia-covid-19 - This has been a great support for desperate people and giving some comfort.

"Our appeal to the British Government is please just talk to us.

"You told us to leave last Monday at the same time all the carriers pulled out.

"We have no alternative but to stay and wait. There are no flights so how can we leave?"

Current British Foreign Office travel advice for any British citizens abroad is to return now, where and while there are still commercial routes available.

Many airlines are suspending flights and many airports are closing, preventing flights from leaving.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin said although she couldn't comment on individual cases, she was urging any constituents in trouble abroad to get in touch.

She said: "The Government is working hard to help people across the world who have found themselves abroad at a time when the advice is for them to come home immediately.

"I have been advising people to stay in close contact with the relevant local consular office for up-to-date advice.

"There is a national hotline – 0207 0081500 - for those who need further assistance and people should to sign up for alerts from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice website for their specific country if interest.

"I urge any local people who are encountering problems to get in touch and I will do my best to help."
