SIR – This is not a letter to abuse cyclists but one to restore some balance between them and the motorists as we all have the right to go about our business without accident.

On two occasions in the last few weeks at around 5pm I have arrived from Poolbrook at the Three Counties traffic lights and turned left towards Hanley Swan.

It is not unreasonable to over take (gently) on the long straight.

On the first occasion I was 95 per cent committed when to my horror a cyclist came into view coming towards me!

Only yesterday two cyclists somewhat apart approached the lights as I was going in the other direction.

Some might say “So what?” The problem being in both instances the cyclist was in dark clothing on a dark bike and with no front light.

It beggars the question about due care and attention – if I can’t see them how on earth can I (or any other motorist) be blamed if something awful happens?

The consequences are too awful, to say the least.

A plea, therefore, for cyclists to light up before the inevitable happens.

I hope this is a respectful and positive statement to encourage safety.
