Who are you?

Gough Bailey Wright

When did you open and why?

We’ve been around since 1936 and we exist to help businesses achieve their objectives through integrated communications and effective marketing campaigns.

Tell us about your business

We’re a multiple award-winning independent full-service marketing agency that offers Public Relations, Creative, Websites, Digital Marketing and specialist Property Communications.

How did you decide on the name?

Tom C. Gough and Partners was established in 1936 and was a well-respected brand in our industry, so when Sue Bailey and Michelle Wright carried out a management buyout in 2005, it was only natural to keep the Gough brand alive, to retain the heritage and maintain the reputation of the business. With both directors being well known within their respective professional areas it felt right to add their names to the company.

Who works there?

There are 20 of us, a vibrant mix of marketing professionals from Bromsgrove and the surrounding region including budding young account managers and very experienced and respected senior professionals.

Who are your customers?

We serve businesses of all sizes locally, regionally and nationally, from Bromsgrove-based companies right through to international brands. We work with both b2b and consumer brands from start-ups to multi-nationals and we’re particularly strong in the leisure attraction and property sectors.

What’s your most memorable / proudest moment in business?

Our Managing Director Michelle Wright comments “Carrying out a management buy-out to become owners and leaders of the business was a high point for Sue and I, as was moving into St John’s House. I still feel lucky to have found such a fabulous building and I’m sure it marked a new era of growth and success for the agency. On a personal level my recent appointment to Chair of the IPA for England and Wales (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) has been the icing on the cake”.

Have you had any strange/ quirky suggestions or stories from customers?

We get them from time to time, but in this business, we see them as a chance to exercise our creativity and we rise to the challenge. We once ran a campaign to promote vasectomies with images of plums, tennis balls and walnuts with the heading “Whatever he calls them, they’re safe in our hands!”

What are your ambitions for the future?

2020 is our year for growth, with new clients and new team members already coming on board. We’re recruiting and we’re investing in staff training, and we’re building on our foundations. It’s our values of integrity, passion and creativity that will see us continue to thrive, developing new skills, winning new business and rising to a range of new challenges. Our sector is changing, and the lines between marketing disciplines are blurring, so the future has to be about adapting, training and recruiting. Ultimately, we need to stay ahead of the game so that we can offer our clients the very best marketing solutions to achieve their business objectives.
