A DRUNK was kicked out of a Worcester nightclub and assaulted a police officer.

Callum Morris had been in the Velvet nightclub in the city on the night of January 26 when he was removed by bouncers.

Prosecutor Rhiannon Lucas told the court he began shouting at them and that police officers were called soon after.

She said: “On the night in question, police were called to the city centre at 3.15am because of a male who had been ejected from the nightclub.

“They asked him to leave the area and said he seemed very agitated.”

The court heard Morris had been ejected from the club without any warning and that he had lunged towards one of the officers.

Another officer, PC Neil Bennett intervened to protect his fellow officer and pinned Morris against the wall.

At this point, Morris kicked out and hit PC Bennett in the shin before being taken to the floor.

While on the ground, Morris struggled while officers were trying to handcuff him, causing the sharp moving part of one of the cuffs to pierce PC Bennett’s hand.

Miss Lucas added: “In his police interview he said he had been drinking with friends and had eight to 10 drinks. He couldn’t remember what happened but agreed it was assault.”

The court heard in Morris’ defence that he had not lunged at the officer, but had been trying to get back to the bouncers to continue shouting at them.

Magistrates were told the 26 year-old, of Apple Tree Road, Pershore, had self referred to Swanswell because, although he did not drink daily, he accepted he did drink to excess.

Chair of the bench Sarah Murray said: “Assaulting any emergency worker is a matter we take seriously, so for the matter of assaulting PC Bennett we are issuing a band B fine of £307, a victim surcharge, costs of £85 and compensation to PC Bennett of £75.”

No separate penalty was given to the second charge, of being drunk and disorderly, which Morris pleaded guilty to along with an assault charge.
