EIGHT weeks of roadworks are set to get under way in Stourport next week in an effort to make the high street more accessible.

The project is part of Worcestershire County Council's Town Centre Improvement Programme and work is set to start on Monday, February 3.

It will involve relaying sections of footpaths, replacing drainage pipes and upgrading street lighting in the high street, as well as the installation of bollards to protect walkways from vehicles.

Pavements on the junction with Bridge Street, York Street and New Street are also set to be resurfaced.

Councillor Ken Pollock, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: "I'm delighted that work is beginning on this scheme to improve Stourport high street.

"The planned works will improve this area greatly, ensuring that the street is much more accessible for everyone.

"It is another example of our Town Centre Improvement Programme which has been successful in other areas of the county – a programme of works that we plan to invest more money in this year."

The scheme is expected to go on for eight weeks and the council has warned there will be footpath, carriageway and parking restrictions in place during the works.

However, Worcestershire Council has assured that through-routes will be maintained for the entirety of the project.

Three-way traffic signals will be in place for some time around the junction with Bridge Street, York Road and New Street.

For the first week, the existing bus stop outside HSBC will be suspended and a temporary bus stop will be provided on the parking bay outside Severn Estate Agents.

A letter sent to nearby residents and business owners states that work will typically be carried out Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

Stourport is the latest area to benefit from the Town Centre Improvement Programme following projects last year on The Shambles in Worcester and Worcester Street in Kidderminster.
