2019 turned out to be a busy year in Bromsgrove.

From Royal visits to tragic deaths, our reporting team were there to bring you all of the latest events from around the region.

And we look forward to doing the same in 2020.

Woman charged with local man's murder

Bromsgrove Advertiser:

LOCAL man Wayne Coventry, aged 36, died after an incident at a house in Humphrey Avenue, Charford on October 14.

Wayne’s cousin, Stacie Jane, later said on Facebook: “The pain is unreal for everyone, total shock heartache and disbelief ! No matter what, he could always make you smile with his jokes and cheeky smile.”

Cordelia Farrell, aged 37, from Birmingham, was later charged with murder and is due to be tried at crown court in April.

Princess Anne makes "flying visit" to Bromsgrove

HRH The Princess Royal visited medical equipment manufacturers and suppliers Kimal at its Aston Fields Trade Park base on Friday, November 15.

After flying into town via the royal helicopter, Princess Anne enjoyed a tour of the Sherwood Road firm and learned more about its ‘Innovation Programme’ and manufacturing processes.

Kimal has been supplying hospitals across the world with customised procedural solutions and vascular access devices for more than 50 years.

Alan Press, Kimal’s executive chairman, said the visit had been ‘an honour’.

Floods cause chaos in Bromsgrove

In November, heavy rain brought flooding to parts of Worcestershire, including Bromsgrove. The weather caused major disruption on the roads and to local train services. Luckily our reporting team were there to bring you all the latest updates.

Bromsgrove football fan's life saved by opposition supporters

A football fan from Bromsgrove suffered a heart attack after a defeat for his beloved Huddersfield Town - but his life was saved by opposition fans.

The elderly supporter collapsed outside the Cardiff City Stadium, after Huddersfield’s 2-1 loss in the Championship in South Wales.

But Cardiff fans rushed to the aid of the man helping perform CPR before St John’s Ambulance staff took over.

Ambulance workers took the man to the University Hospital for Wales where he sadly died a fortnight later after suffering a second heart attack.

Bromsgrove pub wins recognition - for its toilets

A BROMSGROVE pub was flushed with success after winning acclaim for the quality and standards of its toilets – in the Loo of the Year Awards 2019.

The Golden Cross Hotel, in the High Street, was awarded a platinum rating by inspectors.

The toilets were judged on décor, maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, and drying equipment.

Woman found guilty of keeping horses in death row conditions at Stoke Prior yard

Bromsgrove Advertiser:

A WOMAN who kept horses in filthy conditions where animals starved to death was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering in September.

Annette Nally, who denied four charges in an RSPCA prosecution, was later jailed for 26 weeks.

Members of the public in the hearing at Redditch Magistrates Court, cried as a judge gave his damning assessment of how Nally, aged 50, of Pryor Road, Oldbury, kept horses at a yard in Stoke Prior, where water troughs were found empty and there was no food provided for the horses.

The charges, three of causing unnecessary suffering and one of failure to ensure welfare, related to eight horses found at Stoke Prior on July 14 2018 and others at another yard run by Nally in Solihull.

Dying Bromsgrove man to get dream wedding

MORE than £3,000 was raised to give a dying Bromsgrove man and his fiancee a dream wedding in April.

Jay Snellus had been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour, known as a glioblastoma tumour.

The news came as a huge shock to 34-year-old Jay, his partner Maria, and their children, as well as Jay's family and friends.

Thanks to the generosity of the Bromsgrove community the couple had a wedding booked at Manor Hill in Upton Warren on May 14 and kind-hearted people donated rings, flowers, jewellery for the wedding party, a car, cake, balloons, and many other items for the special day.

New restaurant brings a taste of Poland to Bromsgrove

In June a new restaurant was causing a stir in Bromsgrove.

Darren and Dominika Griggs opened Polish restaurant Red & White - named after the country's dual-striped flag - in Stoke Road, Aston Fields.

Dominika, originally from Poland, and husband Darren said the idea has been in the couple's minds for some time.

Coroner cries as he gives open verdict at Tom Jones inquest

THE year started with the inquest of tragic Bromsgrove student Tom Jones who drowned after falling into the River Severn.

Tom, a student at Worcester University, disappeared on a night out.

The inquest heard the 18-year-old may have gone towards the river after hearing a cry for help.

Coroner Geraint Williams, who became overwhelmed with emotion during the inquest, said a post mortem had given the cause of death as drowning.

Digbeth Dining Club announces first Bromsgrove event

In May it was announced that an award-winning street food event was heading to Bromsgrove for the first time.

Digbeth Dining Club was running its first-ever 'Bromsgrove Dining Club' in August.

Founded in 2012, Digbeth Dining Club runs street food events on a weekly basis in Birmingham and, within a year of starting, it had been voted Britain’s 'Best Street Food Event'.

But it has also branched out to other locations including Longbridge, Codsall, Warwick, Kings Heath, Shrewsbury, Shirley, Wolverhampton, Coventry and Solihull on a monthly basis...and now Bromsgrove!
