On 17th October, in place of the advertised speaker, our member Phil Bawn outlined how he became interested in music by listening to a radio which ran on a battery as his house had no electricity. He quoted from the Radio Times of 1948 all the bands that could be heard on the BBC Light Programme, then gave us a recital on his Yamaha keyboard, demonstrating the incredible range of effects possible on this instrument. The first song was “You are my sunshine” which we were surprised to learn dated from 1911. Then followed several other familiar pieces by artistes such as Hoagy Carmichael, Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, Max Wall, Elvis Presley, the German jazz organist Barbara Dennerlein, amongst others. Phil was in fine voice and our member David Senior was enlisted to play as well. As always, the varied talents and interests of members are amazing. We meet at 10:00 every Thursday at The Boathouse, Evesham Rowing Club. Our speaker on 24th October is our member David Senior who will be presenting a video of Jordan and on 31st October Denis Harvey will be asking “What’s in a Name?” Full details can be found on our website www.eveshamprobus.co.uk Alan Smith
