BLUE chalk anti-Brexit signs have appeared on the floor in the city centre.

Around 40 signs which say #StopBrexit and #BinBrexit have been plastered from the Cross and throughout the High Street.

The signs are outside a series of shops including McDonalds, Natwest, the Slug and Lettuce and Boots.

There are also tyre tracks left in the blue chalk near to Pret a Manger.

A pink chalk sign has been left outside Ann Summers and there are pink marks outside the city's Guildhall while EU flags have been left outside the Cathedral.

Street cleaners have been clearing up the streets this morning and an area outside the Guildhall is taped off.

City council Environmental operations manager, Mark Baylis, said CCTV shows it looks like three people were responsible for the damage.

He said: “Looks like it was three guys from CCTV. Basically they’ve sprayed on the floor and put flags up everywhere. It’s all coming up easy. They’ve sprayed everywhere with graffiti spray. There’s ways and means of protesting but not this. If they want to have demo that’s fine but there are better ways.”

Mr Baylis said the sweepers came out at 5am and were going to have to miss their break to sort out the mess.

He added: “We were going to use a jet wash, but it was coming off so easy we used the sweepers and a bit of anti graffiti spray.”

A woman outside Guildhall who didn’t want to be named, said: “It’s all down the high street. It looks horrible. Someone’s obviously just got a template and gone to nearly every shop. We were here last night and there was nothing then.”

A group has contacted this paper anonymously to say they are responsible and say they had intended to leave the signs all over the city centre as well as put up flags and banners in the city's High Street and on its bridges.
