RESIDENTS are being urged to attend a special stem cell donor drive taking place in Alvechurch.

Alvechurch Fisheries is hosting the event, which is encouraging people to sign up on the stem cell donor register and ultimately save people like Finley Hill from Belbroughton.

Luckily for Finn a match has been found.

The seven-year-old schoolboy, who attends Hagley Primary School, has been diagnosed with rare immune system disorder familial HLH (familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis).

The condition causes damaged and enlarged organs, and without stem cell treatment he will die.

However, people are still being urged to take part.

A spokesman from the event said: "Only two per cent of people in the UK are on the register, but its quick and simple to join. Anyone aged 17 to 55 in generally good health can sign up - just three cheek swabs and you're done.

"You stay on the register until you're 60 and will be contacted if you're a match. In 90 per cent of cases the donation is just like giving blood. Saving lives doesn't get easier than that."

The drive, On September 21, is part of of a bigger event, Oscar’s Worcester Walkers, which will see hundreds of people take part in an organised a walk from Worcestershire Royal Hospital to Birmingham Children’s Hospice to raise money for Anthony Nolan/DKMS, inspired by Oscar Saxelby-Lee who recently had a stem cell transplant.

It runs from from 11am to 4pm.
