COUNCILLORS have agreed to spend nearly £900,000 on security to help protect Sandwell tenants from crime and anti-social behaviour.
The borough’s cabinet has given approval for a four year contract to maintain, repair and improve concierge services, door entry systems and CCTV in its high and low rise blocks of flats.
A report to councillors said the renewed deal with Openview Security Solutions Ltd will see £886,025 being spent on security allowing tenants to feel safe within their homes and communities.
Cllr Joanne Hadley, cabinet member for homes, recommending the contract said: “The current contract expires on August 31 and is funded by the housing revenue account. The new contract will run from September 1 to August 2023.
“It is anticipated that the ongoing maintenance of CCTV and door entry equipment will allow the council to continue to work with partners to monitor and act upon instances of crime and anti-social behaviour .
She added: “The impact on crime and disorder as a result of this maintenance contract is expected to be positive.”
Housing officers have said the work will also help improve safety and crime prevention by monitoring the town centre and estate cameras and high and low-rise door entry systems from its Roway Lane site.
In replying to a question from Cllr Danny Millard on whether the contract would improve employment opportunities for residents, Cllr Hadley said: “Within the contract is specific requirements for apprenticeships, work experience and community related activities.”
The report was accepted unanimously.
