HEREFORD'S independent restaurants have narrowly won our light-hearted poll into the city's burger preferences.

Forty-six per cent of the 1,165 people who voted said they would rather eat a burger from an independent cafe/restaurant.

Forty-five per cent said they would rather go to Burger King.

McDonald's came in third. Only nine per cent of those who voted said they preferred the chain's burgers.

Our poll was a response to speculation that Burger King is planning to open a restaurant in the city.

Last week it placed advertising for restaurant staff with the location for the jobs given as Hereford.

The national US chain does not currently have any outlets in Herefordshire – and the vacancies led many on social media to think that the Whopper in on its way.

But Burger King is still not able to throw any lights on a possible opening.

A spokesman for the chain said: "All Burger King restaurants are operated and owned by independent franchisees. As such, the locations are independent business entities and thus European competition law prohibits us from dictating certain policies, such as those related to pricing, products, staffing and promotions."

Burger King said it did not have details of any job vacancies in any of its restaurants.
