OVER the weekend the Worcester News covered the story on the planning committee decision to reject a new city KFC, but accept a restaurant nearby.

Chairman Chris Mitchell branded the decision of his own committee as snobbery, as it "smacked of classism".

The decision split the community, with fast food loving fans desperate to see the popular chain have a city centre outlet, but the police labelling it a "recipe for disaster" due to the proposed location. The KFC application was originally adjourned so that councillors had time to visit the area at night - a bizarre decision as you would have thought councillors would have knowledge of this area. Eventually the KFC was rejected on a close vote of just six to four, a decision I'm sure will please some and disappoint others.

And that is always the difficulty with planning issues. Sometimes the decision isn't obvious, which is why we elect representatives to consider evidence and base their vote on it. We should hope, and expect, each application is always considered fairly, and on its own merits.
