CLASSIC Gilbert and Sullivan is something of a family tradition for one local family.

Next week, the Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be back at The Rose Theatre in Kidderminster.

This time they will be performing The Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular and enduring operettas.

It is an extra exciting event for Pauline Peak as three generations of her family are taking part.

She is director, and after fair auditions her daughter, Bev, was given the part of Yum-Yum and her granddaughters will be singing in the chorus.

Pauline said “Our society always feels like a family as it is so friendly, but having a daughter and granddaughters in it, is the icing on the cake.

“The love of performing really runs in the family and the extra energy the young people bring to the performance is an added bonus. We are all so lucky to be able to work together in such a fab show”.

This is Pauline’s 50th year in show business, but her first time directing for Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

A spokesman for the show said: “ A year before the action of this opera begins, Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado of Japan, fled his father’s imperial court to escape marriage with Katisha, an elderly lady.

“Disguised as a travelling musician, he met and fell in love with Yum-Yum, the young ward of Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor in the town of Titipu.

“Yum-Yum, however, was already betrothed to her guardian, and Nanki-Poo left Titipu in despair... how will it end for poor Nanki-Poo?

“This well -loved musical tale is brought to life by the highly regarded society from Worcester.”

The run for the show will be from October 23 to October 27.
